The Pen Problem
5.2 Billion disposable pens are sold every year in the US alone. That’s enough pens to wrap around the earth 18 times. 2.9 Million gallons of ink are used to make those pens – and most of it is toxic. That’s the equivalent of 4.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Almost all of those pens and a significant portion of the ink end up in landfills. The EPA reports that all landfills eventually leak.
The DBA Pen is a simple solution to this growing problem. It is 98% Biodegradable. It uses a natural, ecologically friendly ink. And it is designed to look good and write just as well as any other rollerball pen on the market.
Conventional Pen

Most pens are made from a mixture of different materials, including steel, polypropelene, nylon, polyester, and a number of chemicals. Because of this complex recipe, they are not usually accepted for recycling, which means 5.2 billion pens end up in our already overflowing landfills every year. Additionally, most pen inks are oil-based and often contain potentially dangerous biocides that can be harmful to both humans and the environment. For this reason DBA chose to develop a biodegradable alternative.
DBA Pen

The DBA Pen body is composed of an innovative new bio-plastic derived primarily from potatoes with no gentically modified (non-GMO) content. Inside the Pen, our ink reservoir is made from a renewable, biodegradable fiber and uses a custom-formulated ink that meets the highest safety standards for human and environmental toxicity.
Conventional Pen

Most pens are made in conventional low-efficiency factories that contribute to higher levels of environmental pollution. Unfortunately, many companies do not reveal their factories' environmental policies to the public and are often located in countries with poor regulation standards.
DBA Pen

DBA has partnered with one of the most ecologically sustainable factories in the United States to produce the DBA Pen. Powered by on-site wind-turbines and equipped with the most energy efficient machines available, the factory exceeds the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. It also uses a full fleet of hybrid and zero-emission vehicles, a sunlighting system to minimize electric light, and innovative, rain water-assisted cooling systems.
Conventional

Conventional pens are most often sold in "blister-packs" — these are cardboard sheets with PVC bubbles glued on to hold the pens in place. Unfortunately, PVC is made with chlorine and dangerous heavy metals, and none of this can be recycled. Learn more

DBA Pen

The DBA packaging is composed of 100% recycled content, FSC certified paper, printed with vegetable-based inks, and is 100% recyclable.
Conventional

Many conventional inks contain toxic dyes and preservatives that can be dangerous to both humans and the environment. Unfortunately, no other pen manufacturers currently list their ink ingredients so it is difficult for consumers to know which are safe. DBA hopes to change this practice by introducing ingredient lists on our packaging so that buyers can be completely aware of every single component.
DBA

The DBA Pen uses an ink composed of a few simple ingredients: water, non-toxic pigments, glycerin (a food-grade sugar alcohol ), and sodium benzoate (a food-grade preservative). That means it's safe for both humans and for the environment.
Conventional

Most pens end up in landfills where they can leach toxic ink residue into the soil and water, while the plastic housing will remain intact for thousands of years.
DBA

The DBA Pen is 98% biodegradable and has been designed to decompose in a compost facility within 180 days, leaving behind no trace whatsoever. The remaining nib constitutes only 2% of the Pen's weight and must be disposed of as garbage.
Materials
The DBA pen housing is composed of an unique bio-plastic derived from renewable potatoes and has been selected for its ability to biodegrade in a commercial composting facility. This material meets the ASTM D 6400 standard and is certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (
www.bpiworld.org). The pen nib is the only portion of the Pen that will not decompose, but it can be easily removed for disposal. As DBA continues to improve the Pen design, we hope to achieve 100% biodegradability in the near future. Finally, the unique ink reservoir is composed of fibers that are also fully biodegradable.
Ink
Our in-house formulated ink is the first ever to meet both the ACMI AP Non-Toxic standard as well as EU directives 98/8/EC and 76/548/EEC, all of which are the most stringent standards for human and environmental toxicity. It is composed simply of water, non-toxic pigments, glycerin (a food-grade sugar alcohol), and sodium benzoate (a food-grade preservative).
Proper Disposal
Although the DBA pen is 98% biodegradable it is important that it be disposed of in a proper composting facility for complete degradation. Many towns and cities now have appropriate systems in place, and you can find a location near you at
Find A Composter. If for any reason you do not have access to a composter, DBA pens may be returned to us for proper disposal. In exchange, we will give you a coupon towards future purchases!
